Over 500,000 people are expected to attend the 2009 Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off. The event is held at Victorian Square in Sparks, Nevada September 2nd-7th (Labor Day weekend), and features rib cooking and eating competitions, six stages of music, fun for the kids, and more.

As you can imagine, hotel rooms book well in advance. But we've found lodging available close to the action at the following hotels and motels:

Hot August Nights is Reno's biggest annual event, with over 800,000 people attending the classic car shows, free rock concerts, parades, drag races and other attractions. This year's festivities run from July 31st through August 9th Click here to see the official event schedule.

Hotels fill up fast, but there are still rooms available at very reasonable rates, including weekends and weeknights. For the opening weekend (July 31 to August 2), for example, we found rates under $80 per night downtown at the Silver Legacy, Circus Circus, and Eldorado. In Sparks, John Ascuaga's Nugget has rooms from $56. Elsewhere, the Peppermill, Atlantis, and Grand Sierra still had some good deals.
